Scientists develop a simplified animation capture process drone technology

In the traditional process of making an animated film in the studio, it is often necessary for the actor to perform related actions at multiple camera shooting angles. The computer tracks the markers on the actor's body, builds a moving 3D "skeleton", then digitizes it in the animation post-production and ultimately renders the animated character. Now, Tobias N?geli, a computer scientist at the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, Switzerland, has developed a new technology based on drones that is expected to make the entire animation process easier.

The technology only requires no more than two commercial cameras, a notebook and a special device that tracks the movement of the actors. The set's infrared LEDs are distributed throughout each joint of the body, and the actor can move in an indoor or outdoor environment after wearing, performing actions such as walking, running, or climbing, and is no longer limited to the studio environment.

The system relies on two drones for tracking and shooting, and uses artificial intelligence to predict the actors' movements and pre-adjust the shooting position without losing key details. Each drone is equipped with a filter that allows the camera to "see" the infrared mark on the actor's body. It is then analyzed and processed by transfer to a computer and converted into a 3D skeleton.

Since these cameras and actors are moving together, only two can capture enough detail. In comparison, the cameras of traditional studios are fixed, so many shooting positions are needed to capture the actors. N?geli is now improving his technology through his startup Tinamu Labs. He hopes that the system can be used not only for making movies, but also for applications such as gait analysis or tracking athlete performance for people with reduced mobility.
